Flemish merchant, patron and collector. He belonged to an Antwerp family which had moved to Amsterdam for religious reasons. Working for the family firm, by 1616 he was established in Venice, dealing in armaments and the fitting-out of ships. He returned to Amsterdam in the early 1630s.
