Mixed woven fabric, consisting of a silk warp and worsted weft, and having a corded surface. The name means ‘papal’ and alludes to Avignon (which until its absorption into France in 1791 belonged to the papacy), where the fabric was originally manufactured. Double poplin is a heavy variety of poplin.
