English ceramic manufacturer, active in France. After an early career as victualling contractor for the British Army in America and an aspiring parliamentarian (he stood unsuccessfully three times), Potter moved to Paris, where in 1789 he established the Manufacture du prince de Galles, in the rue de Crussol; he seems also to have been involved in potteries at Forges-les-Eaux and Montereau. In 1792 Potter bought the Chantilly Porcelain Factory (see Chantilly, §2(i)),
