(b Halifax, bap. 19 March 1741; d London, 8 June 1799). English organist and concert organizer. He studied music with Hartley, organist at Rochdale, and later, when he was at Manchester Grammar School, with John Wainwright, deputy organist of the collegiate church. A distinguished academic career took him to Eton (1756), where he studied with Edward Webb, and King’s College, Cambridge, where he was elected a Fellow in 1770
