(b Norwich, 27 April 1824; d London, 29 Oct 1853). English composer. He became a chorister at Norwich Cathedral, where Zechariah Buck, the organist, was so impressed by his talents (as shown for example by an anthem in eight parts, composed at the age of 11) that he took him as an articled pupil at the age of 14. He became a proficient organist, playing Bach’s fugues at 17.
