He was the author of a Harmonic Introduction (Harmonikē eisagōgē), an eclectic mixture of Aristoxenian and Pythagorean theory, together with a treatment of notation. The statesman and writer Cassiodorus knew his treatise in a Latin translation credited to Mutianus (otherwise unknown).
