(b Paris, 14 Oct 1898; d Clichy, nr Paris, 8 Oct 1980). French musician and inventor. He is best known for his electronic musical instrument, the Ondes martenot, which he first demonstrated on 20 April 1928 at the Paris Opéra. He was also a conductor and professor at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, and director of the Ecole d'Art Martenot at Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris. He wrote
