(b Palermo, c1750; d London, 27 March 1807). Italian composer. He moved from Sicily to Naples to study with Piccinni. His career as an opera composer began in Florence and was centred in northern Italy until he moved to London in 1785. Most theatres engaged him to write serious operas, but during a ten-year period, beginning in 1775 with L'astuzie amorose, several Venetian theatres commissioned comic operas.
