He studied music in Havana, where his teachers included Jaime Prats, Pedro Sanjuan, and Roldán, then in 1947 went to New York to the Juilliard School of Music and studied with Steuermann (piano), Bernard Wagenaar (composition) and Fritz Mahler (orchestral conducting).
