(b Madrid, 29 Oct 1934). American composer of Spanish birth. After studying in New York with George Copeland (piano) and Elliott Carter (1948–51), he attended the Conservatorio di S Cecilia, Rome, and Columbia University, where his teachers included Henry Cowell. He also studied with Robert Erickson at the San Francisco Conservatory (1959–62) and with Darius Milhaud at Mills College. With Morton Subotnick, he founded and directed the San Francisco Tape Music
