(b Philadelphia, 29 Nov 1917). American cellist. After attending the Curtis Institute (1936–40) he performed with the Cleveland Orchestra (1940–47); he then worked in studios in New York (1948–53) and (from 1954) Los Angeles. From 1957 to 1961 he was a member of Chico Hamilton’s quintet, with which he recorded the album Gongs East (1958, WB 1271). Later he played in ensembles that recorded with Nat Adderley (1974) and Ronnie Laws
