(b Norfolk, VA, 9 Feb 1910; d Stockholm, 7 Feb 1979). American trumpeter and singer. He learned trumpet while at the Jenkins Orphanage in Charleston, South Carolina. From 1928 to 1933 he played mainly with Alphonso Trent, though he also worked with Al Sears and Stuff Smith in Buffalo (1932). He then led his own bands (1933–8) and made brief appearances with Willie Bryant, Jimmie Lunceford, and Lil Armstrong.
