He studied trumpet from 1945 to 1947 and then worked in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York, where he studied composition for a year at the Juilliard School (1955–6). He played double bass as a freelance with Tommy Dorsey’s ghost band under Warren Covington and then with the big bands of Claude Thornhill (1958) and Woody Herman (1959–60), while also studying
