(b Postmasburg, South Africa, 18 May 1937). South African guitarist. Self-taught, he worked in Britain for several years with Ray Ellington’s quartet (1963–4), Tubby Hayes, Jack Parnell, and the double bass player Johnny Hawksworth. From 1965 to 1967 he appeared with Parnell on television and led his own trios, and he recorded with the pianist Roger Webb (1964) and the French-Canadian guitarist Art de Villiers; later he recorded with Charles Earland
