(b Los Angeles, 17 Jan 1931). American tenor, alto, and soprano saxophonist. He began as a clarinetist, but changed to saxophone in 1944. In 1948–9 he was a member of Roy Porter’s big band, then worked in Phoenix, where he joined Lionel Hampton. He was briefly with Floyd Ray in 1950, after which he played with Charles Brown until 1952. He rejoined Hampton in 1952–3 and toured Europe in late 1953.
