(b Malïy Nesvetay, nr Novocherkassk, 8/20 Nov 1867; d Leningrad [now St Petersburg], 21 Nov 1943). Russian tenor. He studied in Moscow and with S. W. Gabel in St Petersburg, where he made his début as Faust in 1893. There followed a period of training in Italy, with performances at Turin and Reggio Emilia.
