Opera in three acts by leoš Janáček to his own libretto after gabriela Preissová;’s play Její pastorkyňa; Brno, National Theatre, 21 January 1904. (Pastorkyně – in dialect, pastorkyňa – means simply ‘not own daughter’; in the play and the opera, Jenůfa is both stepdaughter and foster daughter to the Kostelnička. Janáček, when approving the German translation, was anxious to promote Stieftochter, ‘stepdaughter’, rather than Ziehtochter or Pflegetochter, ‘foster daughter’. ‘Stepdaughter’
