(b Mainz, 26 April 1851; d Munich, 3 Nov 1917). German bass. He studied in Berlin, making his début in 1880 at Hamburg as Masetto. Successively engaged at Poznán, Düsseldorf, Nuremberg, the Kroll Opera, Berlin, and the German Theatre, Prague, in 1898 he became a member of the Munich Hofoper. There he sang in the first performances of Siegfried Wagner’s Der Bärenhäuter (1899) and of Wolf-Ferrari’s Le donne curiose
