English opera company. It was established in 1898 after a successful opera tour in South Africa by the Irish bass Charles Manners and his wife, the soprano Fanny Moody; its aim was to produce grand opera in English. At first it toured the provinces; by 1902 there were two Moody-Manners companies on the road. The principal company, with 175 members, gave seasons that year and in 1903 at Covent Garden, at Drury Lane in 1904
