Tort Law: Text and Materials brings together a selection of carefully chosen extracts from cases and materials, with explanation. Each section begins with a clear overview of the law, followed by illustrating extracts from case law and from government reports and scholarly literature, which are supported by explanation and analysis. The chapters start by examining intentional interference with the person, negligence, breach of duty, and causation and remoteness. They move on to consider defences to negligence and duty of care (such as psychiatric illness, economic loss, omissions and acts of third parties, and public bodies), and special liability regimes. Next, nuisance is examined, along with the rule in Ryland v Fletcher. The book then looks at defamation, privacy, vicarious liability, and damages for personal injury. Finally, it considers death and damages, and how tort works.

Keywords: case law; government reports; negligence; breach of duty; duty of care; special liability regimes; Ryland v Fletcher; defamation; privacy; personal injury
