In the 1980s, when the Galician clothing and textile industry started to take-off and Galician fashion was born, Galicia did not have a consolidated textile company structure, which other Spanish regions such as Catalonia and Valencia had. It proved difficult in the first years after the creation of the Autonomous Galician Community to create a cultural identity around a sector with no tradition and which is closely linked to the latest trends and modernity. The slow pace of industrialization and the agrarian character of Galician society did not give any indications as to the growth of the sector. Nonetheless, in a relatively short period, this sector has managed to grow into a very important industry as a consequence of the ‘Galicia Moda’ project, the object of this study. This article takes a look at the strategy executed in order to launch the budding Galician fashion to a higher level.
