This paper offers publication and analysis of a manuscript list of purchasers and prices at the 1922 sale of the extensive Egyptian collection of the Revd William MacGregor, together with discussion of the place of Egyptian art in 1920s taste and collections. Prices are compared with those achieved by material from other cultures, and the motivations and interests of some of the chief purchasers are assessed. Supplementary material, available at Journal of the History of Collections online, includes a complete transcription of the list of purchasers and prices at the MacGregor sale, and a glossary of purchasers’ names.
