This is an edited version of a paper presented at the tenth annual conference of the Global Philanthropy Forum (GPF), held in Redwood City, California, in April 2011. The GPF aims to enable and enhance the strategic nature of international philanthropy by sharing best practices among individual donors and investors who have established family foundations, as well as executives of private, public, and corporate foundations.
