For several years the Polish parliament has been trying to introduce legal separation as an alternative to divorce but is unable to reach an agreement between the religious and the secular parties. Parliamentary debate and research findings are presented. The main proponent of the introduction of separation is the Catholic Church and the political and social circle connected to it. The research findings confirmed that the variable 'religiousness' constitutes a major factor influencing attitudes towards the legalization of separation.
