The first review in this special edition returns, in honour of the centenary celebration of her birth this year (2008), to the philosopher Simone de Beauvoir whose most significant feminist text, The Second Sex was first published in 1949. This is followed by a review of the second edition of Hipparchia's Choice: An Essay Concerning Women Philosophy, etc., written by notable contemporary French feminist philosopher, Michèle Le Doeuff and published in 2007. Le Doeuff was born 40 years after de Beauvoir and remains an appreciative if critical commentator on the originality of de Beauvoir's project which addresses so centrally the sex of the philosophical text.
