Acute Bacterial Meningitis

Show Summary Details

Acute bacterial meningitis may lead to major systemic complications. Early diagnosis and management of both community-acquired or nosocomial meningitis provide the best opportunity for recovery. Delay to diagnosis, delay to antibiotic treatment, delay to treatment of critical illness, and delay of treatment of increased intracranial pressure remain major concerns in the management of acute bacterial meningitis. Rapid deterioration in patients with acute bacterial meningitis has several causes, and all are discussed in this chapter.
