Chapter 11 describes and illustrates the imaging modalities used to evaluate patients with vascular malformations. Technical information is given for ultrasonography, MRI and angiography. MRI protocols are included. The different types of volume acquisition and flow-based imaging are demonstrated, including 2-D and 3-D MRA, MR venography, MR lymphangiography and CT angiography. Discussion of how best to utilize different types of imaging is invaluable for both diagnostic radiologists and clinicians. Application of these imaging modalities is discussed, in general and in detail, for representative types of vascular malformations. Seventy-eight figures illustrate simple and complex vascular malformations, as well as lesions that can be mistaken for vascular malformations. Most of the figures have multiple components that demonstrate as many imaging features as possible for both common and unusual lesions. A concluding section on antenatal imaging provides a comprehensive literature review of vascular malformations that have been diagnosed in utero with gestational age at detection and findings on ultrasonography and MRI. This section is illustrated with antenatal and postnatal images as well as clinical photographs.
