The complexity of the human brain derives from the intricate arrangement of its neuronal connections. Brain hodology, the study of anatomy of the fibers connecting distant cerebral regions, began in Antiquity, but major advancements in the acquisition of anatomical knowledge have been made only in the last two centuries. This chapter introduces the hodological approach in neurosciences, from the pioneering anatomical work of Johann Christian Reil to its modern pursuit with diffusion MRI. The merits and limitations of deriving anatomical and functional insights from the study of white matter tracts in the human brain are also highlighted.
