This chapter discusses the history of diffusion theory and the measurement of diffusion by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) pulsed gradient methods. The idea of a conditional probability for displacement is introduced, along with the “average propagator” approach, a helpful tool in understanding q-space and diffusive diffraction. Multidimensional correlation and exchange measurements involving both diffusion and relaxation are also explained.
