This chapter is devoted to the diffusion weighted echo planar imaging (DW-EPI) pulse sequence, the most popular choice of acquisition method for diffusion imaging. While other pulse sequences have been proposed to date, EPI remains the most SNR-efficient sequence. SNR efficiency is very important for DTI due to the need for many diffusion directions and that diffusion imaging is based on destruction of signal that reduces the SNR, in particular for high b-values. The drawbacks and problems of DW-EPI, including geometric distortions, signal dropouts, are discussed, both in terms of their cause and manifestation and ways on how to deal with them.
