This chapter recounts the earliest days in the development of Pulsed Field Gradient Spin Echo-NMR (PFGSE-NMR) for the measurement of diffusion. It describes the inception of the idea as well as its antecedents. The PFGSE-NMR experiment extends the range of diffusion coefficients that may be studied. One of the secondary advantages of pulsed field gradient experiments is that for short gradient pulses the diffusion time is precisely defined, making restricted diffusion easier to study. The first experiments involved homogeneous liquids where Fick's law could be assumed to be operating. Soon afterwards systems in which barriers to diffusion made restrictions to free diffusion likely for longer diffusion times were studied. All of these experiments were made on bulk samples since MRI had not yet been invented.
