This chapter charts the development of diffusion MRI from the very beginning, as seen through the eyes of one of its innovators. It covers the history from initial conception of the idea, the acquisition of the first maps of the diffusion coefficient in the human brain in 1985, developments in the intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) model, to the maturation into diffusion tensor imaging, and discusses the current state of knowledge about the biophysics underpinning variations in the diffusion-weighted MR signal. Personal anecdotes and early images are used to illustrate the fascinating twenty-five-year history of diffusion MRI.
