Problem behavior is the major reason why people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) fail to make a good adjustment to society. This chapter begins by defining problem behavior. It then addresses the issues of prevalence and clinical significance as well as the nature and relevance of the positive behavior support perspective. It presents the five-term contingency—a conceptual scheme for understanding problem behavior—and discusses related methods for assessing the functions and contexts associated with problem behavior. It highlights the critical linkage between assessment and the systematic, rational development of effective intervention strategies. It describes a tripartite model for conceptualizing interventions—namely, avoid/mitigate/cope—and presents the multiple strategies that follow from this conceptualization. It then discusses the issue of outcome success. Finally, it outlines a roadmap for identifying future directions in research and practice with respect to knowledge gaps that need to be addressed.
