Hereditary neuropathies are common. They are often diagnosed when another medical issue begins, for example, orthopedic foot problems or chemotherapy which causes a persistent severe neuropathy. It is important to obtain a very detailed family history for diagnosis. Genetic testing can be helpful in selected cases.
