Case 45 introduces a 53-year-old woman who presented to the sleep clinic with complaints of difficulty sleeping through the night, specifically because of discomfort in her legs and an irritating need to reposition them that was relieved by getting out of bed and walking. About 1 night per week, these symptoms occurred just before going to sleep at night. This problem first developed 30 years prior, during her first pregnancy, though it had increased in recent years.
