The lamprey network coordinating locomotion has been studied extensively. As in all the other vertebrates investigated, the pattern generation is provided at the spinal-cord level, whereas the decision to activate the network is controlled primarily by the locomotor command centers in the brainstem (mesencephalic locomotor region and diencephalic locomotor region), which in turn are controlled from the basal ganglia in the forebrain. This chapter discusses the segmental rhythm-generating circuits and the mechanism underlying the intersegmental coordination.
