Chapter 50 discusses the most important hematologic complications in patients with a prolonged stay in the neurosciences intensive care unit (NICU) and concentrates on the management of anemia and thrombocytopenia. Acute or rapidly emerging anemia may require blood transfusion, but the threshold for blood transfusion has not been clearly defined in patients with critical neurologic illness. It also includes recent guidelines for red blood cell transfusions in critically ill patients.
