Defining persecutory paranoia

The classification and definitions of psychiatric disorders and their symptoms have been subject to recent conceptual critique. Long anomalous, the category of persecutory paranoia, as distinct from paranoid schizophrenia, is here assessed in light of such critique, of new awareness of the limiting legacy of faculty psychology in psychiatric classification, and of recent findings in neuroscience. An intensional definition is proposed emphasizing the attitude of mistrust in persecutory paranoid subjectivity.
