In this chapter, we have reviewed an approach to answering the above questions, but clearly we have only begun to scratch the surface. Given the devastating consequences of BPD—for individuals, their families, and society—a better understanding of the early precursors of BPD, with associated opportunities for intervention, is of crucial importance. As we have shown in this chapter, social cognition provides the key to identifying and understanding the developmental origins of BPD, and with its associated treatment may provide essential opportunities for early intervention.
