In this chapter the general approach to patients with viral encephalitis is discussed, before considering the specific viruses, followed by bacterial and parasitic causes of encephalitis or encephalopathy. For convenience, the section on viruses includes viral myelopathies such as HTLV-1; the section on bacteria includes neurological syndromes caused by bacterial toxins, such as tetanus. The chapter ends with infectious causes of dementia, and in particular prion diseases.
