The suicide rate in Uruguay is very high in comparison with other Latin American countries, and ranks only second to Cuba (WHO 2000a, b). There are multiple reasons for this, however, the main ones concerning economic aspects are high unemployment rates, a poor economy (very low incomes and high debts), forced retirement, and the emigration of young people and professionals, etc. Other reasons include domestic violence, sexual abuse, alcoholism, isolation, and the insufficient treatment of psychiatric patients.
