I argue that contemporary biological psychiatry is moving away from the concept of disease as natural history towards the concept of disease as a destructive physical process underlying signs and symptoms. This lets us see psychiatric explanations as sharing features with other biomedical explanations and also with forms of theoretical justification derived from model organisms.
