The symptom burden for people with heart failure is equivalent to that for people with many other chronic and life-limiting conditions, including cancer. This burden is often prolonged, affects all areas of life and often poorly addressed. This chapter describes the principles of symptom control emphasising the importance of optimising heart failure management as part of symptom management. Specific symptoms are addressed and management plans outlined. Suggestions as to when a referral to specialist palliative care services should be made are given.
