Diuretics are effective both as sole agents and as combination agents with other antihypertensive drugs. The choice of agent will depend on various factors including age, ethnicity, and presence of co-morbidities. Loop diuretics are more effective than thiazide diuretics in advanced renal failure. Rigorous monitoring of electrolyte balance and renal function is essential during treatment. Combination of thiazide or loop diuretics with a potassium-sparing agent may further improve blood pressure control and aid maintenance of normokalaemia.
