• Plain chest X-rays are normal in mild COPD. • Increased bronchovascular markings on chest X-rays are seen in chronic bronchitis. • Hyperinflation, bullae, and oligaemia are seen in chest X-rays in emphysema. • High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans are useful for detecting, defining the extent, and distribution of emphysema. • High-resolution CT scans allow for discrimination of COPD from other pulmonary diseases.
