Intracapsular fractures are classified by division into those fractures that are essentially undisplaced and those that are displaced

Undisplaced fractures are generally treated by reduction and internal fixation

Displaced fractures may be treated by reduction and internal fixation but this incurs the potential complications of re-displacement of the fracture, non-union, and avascular necrosis

Displaced fractures in the elderly are generally treated with a replacement arthroplasty.
