Percutaneous valvular interventions

Show Summary Details

• The technique of percutaneous valve dilatation has proven efficacy in the treatment of mitral stenosis as a substitute for surgical commissurotomy and as a complement to valve replacement. • Aortic valvuloplasty probably has a very limited role in isolation but may find new applications as the first step in the performance of percutaneous aortic valve replacement. • Transcatheter aortic valve implantation is a new and promising technique for patients with aortic stenosis and unacceptable risk for surgery. It is still in its infancy and careful evaluation is needed before defining the precise role of the technique.
