Imaging of the skeleton and the joints in CKD

The musculoskeletal manifestations of chronic renal failure are myriad. Loss of renal function itself and metabolic effects are not the only causes of these changes. The etiology of the kidney failure, the patient's general health, as well as the treatment that the patient receives all influence the bones, joints, and soft tissues in ways that we understand only in part.

The role of imaging in all of its aspects is changing. Radiography is no longer as crucial as before for the diagnosis of renal osteodystrophy. Imaging is important in recognizing the complications of renal bone disease, as well as in the early diagnosis of complications of therapy and in guiding treatment.
