• First line treatments for mania include monotherapy with lithium or valproate or an atypical antipsychotic or a combination of lithium or valproate plus an atypical antipsychotic • If antidepressants are used in conjunction with a mood stabilizer for acute bipolar depression, they should be tapered and discontinued within eight weeks of remission • Lamotrigine, quetiapine and lithium are effective in preventing a depressive relapse • Lithium, valproate, and all atypical antipsychotics assessed to date appear to have efficacy in preventing mania.
