• Verbal description differs between neuropathic and nociceptive pain and can contribute important information to the assessment process • Screening tools alert the clinician to the possible presence of neuropathic pain mechanisms but they do not replace clinical diagnosis • Measurement tools assess the intensity of particular qualities of neuropathic pain once a diagnosis has been made • Screening tools are probably most useful in identifying potential neuropathic pain in non-specialist settings, particularly primary care • Both types of tools can improve measurement sensitivity within clinical trials and epidemiological research which allows more direct comparisons between studies and helps to identify pain qualities that might respond to specific therapies.
